2012 – The year of drama, terrible meme wars, reaction pictures and problematic jokes. We went into the depths of our old tweets, facebook conversations and tumblr posts to find the worst reaction GIFs from that time that only left us thinking

about every single message we sent.

(Warning: Cringe attacks ahead. Do not check your own old chat logs for your own sanity. We have been crying for 3 days).

So

stepaside

because the following article is only for true veterans. The hardest of the hardest. Those of us who can deal with proper 2012 banter.

Back in the day, constructive criticism, mature discussion and simply agreeing to disagree were not an option. Being on the internet meant being at constant war. It meant being ready to fight anyone who even slightly disagreed with you and the only possible reaction to someone insulting your favourite thing was

And boy, we took that task seriously. Relentless insults were exchanged with only one aim – getting this reaction out of your sparring partner:

Usually that did not work too well though. How were we supposed to know that danisnotonfire wearing fake boobs did not come across as the most threatening counter, and calling someone a peasant really didn’t get the point across either?! Really, trying both at the same time was just a recipe for disaster.

Especially when the person we were fighting with actually happened to have half a brain. Those conversations could easily turn the most dedicated fan from an

In the matter of seconds. This led to most conversations ending with both parties terribly confused but if you managed to keep your head and just calmly

You were the winner and all your friends would celebrate you.

Seriously though, you would think in 2016 everyone got the call that those GIFs are outdated and absolutely terrible to use in any circumstance. Obviously, that does not stop modern day teen youtube magazines from still using them. The only thing you can think about that trend is

Because they take it worryingly seriously. I’m not entirely sure who they are trying to appeal to with it, but it surely isn’t your average phandom member because for those every reminder of 2012 only sends them into a state of

Maybe the real question here is, why are we still around to see the complete rise and fall of these GIFs? Why can’t we just let them rest in the depths of old Tumblr posts, long forgotten Facebook chats and most likely deleted Twitter accounts? Why do we even bother? Is this really how we want to spent our time online?

Why do we have to see danisnotonfire succumb to the scary world of facebook clickbait listicles for mums?

Some of you would probably tell us to suck it up and

You’d tell us that  Mr. Danny Flames had it coming with that tumblr humour, emo fringe, and those white boy looks.

But sincerely, we think that it’s time to let go for once and for all, especially the forsaken

GIF. Let them rest. We all deserve it.

[¹] Can you believe i could not find a single Phil GIF cringe enough to make the cut for this article. Dan truly is a gem of meme culture.

[²] Most of these GIFs have been dragged through hell and back, so crediting the makers was super hard. However, if you know who made them originally please feel free to hit us up and we will gladly credit whatever monster cursed the internet with these creations.
